Department of Language Training

 

Language Training Department was established by Order No. 239 of the Rector of OSUIA dated June 12, 2019, based on the Foreign Languages Department (from 1995 to 2002 – the Department of Ukrainian Studies and Language Training) and the Ukrainian Studies Department (from 2002 to 2008 – the Department of Ukrainian Statehood).

 

Over the years, the structural units on the basis of which the Language Training Department was established were headed by: the Department of Ukrainian Studies and Language Training – N.V. Franchuk; the Ukrainian Studies Department – Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor O.V. Hontar, and Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor S.A. Tsviliuk; the Foreign Languages Department – Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor O.M. Mitina; the Language Training Department – Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor N.V. Petliuchenko.

 

Since 2020, the Language Training Department has been headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor O.M. Sytko.

 

The Language Training Department provides training of specialists in full-time/correspondence courses of the first (bachelor’s), second (master’s), and third (educational and scientific) levels of higher education, in the educational degrees of Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Philosophy, in the specialties 053 “Psychology” 081 “Law”, 124 “System Analysis”, and 262 “Law Enforcement Activity”.

 

An integral component of a law enforcement officer’s readiness to perform his official duties is, firstly, proficiency in the state language as the main language of professional communication. Secondly, the openness of Ukrainian society and the intensification of international assistance in connection with armed aggression have significantly increased the importance of foreign language training for law enforcement officers. Secondly, the openness of Ukrainian society and the intensification of international assistance due to armed aggression have significantly increased the importance of foreign language training for law enforcement officers.

 

All this actualizes the need to search for such promising technologies for organizing the teaching of state and foreign languages ​​that would be maximally focused on the professional and practical interests of future specialists and involve the fulfillment of the following tasks:

 

  • the integration of innovative teaching technologies into the educational process, along with the results of modern scientific research in the field of philology and language teaching methodology, based on a competence-based approach in accordance with the requirements of the Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education”;

 

  • the development of Ukrainian-language and foreign-language competencies, in particular, the acquisition of language material and the expansion of vocabulary in both general and specialized terminology;

 

  • the development of psycholinguistic readiness and the enhancement of motivation for academic and future professional activities in the state and foreign languages;

 

  • the development of creativity, critical thinking, and the ability to work in a team, as well as the capacity and readiness to communicate with representatives of different cultures;

 

  • participation in the development and subsequent implementation of the Roadmap for improving language training in higher education institutions that train specialists for the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the National Guard of Ukraine, and the central executive authorities whose activities are directed and coordinated by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

 

The academic and teaching staff of the department actively participate in international, national, and university-level scientific events, including scientific and practical conferences, round tables, and interuniversity scientific seminars. They also undergo professional development at domestic and foreign institutions of higher education.

 

Applicants for higher education annually participate in language competitions and olympiads, including the International Language and Literature Competition for Pupils and Students named after Taras Shevchenko, the International Competition named after Petro Yatsyk, literary quizzes such as “Language Unites Everyone,” “The Name of Shevchenko is Our Majestic Word!”, “Through the Thorns to the Stars,” as well as essay competitions.

 

The Language Training Department established an extracurricular Speaking Club to improve the level of English proficiency among higher education applicants. The purpose of the Speaking Club is to provide every student with the opportunity to practice their communication skills by reinforcing and applying the knowledge they already possess.

 

There are cadets and students scientific clubs at the department: Fascinating English (supervised by Senior Lecturer K.I. Drapaliuk) and Dzherelo (supervised by Professor Ye.V. Tiahnyriadno). During club meetings, applicants for higher education deepen their knowledge of English and Ukrainian, and prepare reports and presentations for conferences, round tables, and other academic events.
