Ukraine – NATO: prospects of integration

On March, 13 a seminar “Ukraine-NATO: prospects of integration” was held at the Department of General Law, Social and Humanitarian Disciplines of the Kherson Faculty of OSUIA.

Within the framework of this seminar, the prospects of joining to the European system of collective security of Ukraine, which builds new approaches to ensuring national security, was discussed.

It was also emphasized that the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the illegal annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, driving against our state so-called “hybrid war”, military intervention in the eastern regions of Ukraine, constant military, political, economic and information pressure from Russia determine the need for more effective guarantees of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.

3-3It was noted that under current conditions, the interaction of our state with NATO obeys of all needs to maximize the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian state and reforming the Armed Forces, approximation to organization standards, that will enable in the future to meet the criteria that are necessary for joining NATO.

It was noted that consultations and cooperation between Ukraine and NATO cover a wide range of industries, starting from peacekeeping operations, reforming security and defense structures, direct military cooperation and weapons to planning for emergencies of civilian character, science and the environment and public diplomacy. In view of the conflict with Russia, cooperation in many industries is intensified, in order to increase Ukraine’s ability to guarantee its own security.

At the same time, now NATO is perceived only as a military organization.
In fact, the Alliance performs wider functions that are important for Ukraine. Only a combination of a successful educational campaign and real action and success inside the country will guarantee not just a positive result of the referendum, and a result that will allow the use of data of this expression of will to strengthen Ukraine’s position on the international arena.

According to the results of the seminar was made a general conclusion, that in the current circumstances, relations between Ukraine and NATO play an important role in ensuring Ukraine’s defense capability. The further movement of Ukraine to full interoperability with the Alliance looks like no alternative in conditions of international and regional security environment, which developed at this time. According to the overwhelming majority of Ukrainians,  joining NATO will guarantee security, because it is not only military but also the military-technical and other support of the country on the part of the Alliance.
