The issues of сooperation between National Police territorial agencies and media in preventing and combating domestic violence were discussed at OSUIA

Round table discussion on “Cooperation between National Police territorial agencies and media in preventing and combating domestic violence and gender-based violence” as part of the International Action “16 Days Against violence” was held in Odesa State University of Internal Affairs.

First Vice-Rector of the University of Internal Affairs, Colonel of Police, PhD in Law, Associate Professor Serhii Bratel, in his opening speech noted the importance of strengthening the information component in combating domestic violence and wished the participants fruitful scientific discussions and constructive dialogue.

Kateryna Pavlichenko, Deputy Minister of the Interior addressed the audience online, emphasizing that the issue of cooperation between the media and the National Police in preventing and combating domestic violence is extremely relevant and important nowadays.

“The formation of zero tolerance for any manifestations of violence in our society depends on the extent to which the media correctly convey information to our citizens”, – said the Deputy Minister.

In his speech, Georgios Pokas, Senior Adviser on General Policing at European Union Advisory Mission Ukraine (EUAM Ukraine), noted the urgency of the round table. He pointed out that violence is a crime and it is necessary to talk about it. “Countries around the world have developed guidelines on how to disseminate information about such crimes, and the first such instruction is security as a matter of priority, that is, if crimes related to violence first of all we must care not only about victim’s identification, but also about the preventionn of violence”, – said Georgios Pokas.

The international expert also stressed that the country’s adoption of the National Human Rights Strategy this year is extremely important for the eradication of gender-based and domestic violence.

Representatives of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, practical units of the National Police, mass media and public organizations joined the discussion on the topic of the scientific event. In particular, the head of the Odessa regional organization of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine Yurii Rabotin, the deputy editor of the Porto-Franco newspaper Oleksandr Galias, the head of the NGO “Faith, Hope, Love” Tetiana Semikop and the regional representative of the UN Population Fund in Odesa regoin took an active part in the discussions. gender expert Liudmyla Akimova.

Important and topical issues of raising public awareness of the forms, causes and consequences of domestic violence, media coverage of information on assistance and protection to victims of domestic violence, as well as ways to establish close cooperation between the media and territorial bodies of the National Police in preventing and combating domestic and gender-based violence were discussed by the participants.
